Laminate Marquetry in Modern Furniture Design
Lucy Turner is a leading figure in modern laminate marquetry, blending artistry and precision to craft furniture with surfaces that sing with colour, texture and narrative. Lucy’s material of choice is Formica® laminate, not only for its aesthetic possibilities, but because of its durability, longevity, and the sustainable story behind it.
Contrary to perceptions of laminate being “plastic,” she is quick to explain that it is made from sustainably sourced paper, impregnated with resin, and compressed under high pressure. The surface is stain-resistant, heat-tolerant, and sealed… and Lucy views this resilience as part of its beauty.
In this interview, we dig into Lucy’s journey, from early maker to master of a specialised craft, and explore how she balances innovation, sustainability, and expressive design in every piece she creates.
Can you tell us a bit about your background as a furniture fabricator and what drew you into this craft of marquetry with laminate sheets?
I’ve always been a maker. From an early age you’d find me creating things from junk, clay, or whatever materials I could get my hands on… never sitting still, and definitely not watching TV! At school, Design and Technology was always my favourite subject.
I went on to study Design at the University of Plymouth, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 3D Design Crafts. After that, I was awarded a place on the Next Move Scheme, funded by the Crafts and Arts Council, at Falmouth University.
The Next Move scheme was quite open-ended, giving me the freedom to explore different paths. At the time, I was making ceramic products, lighting, and furniture, all with a sustainable ethos. Eventually, I began experimenting with laser-cut Formica® laminate sheets — a material I’ve always been drawn to for its colour, tactile feel, and versatility. Once I started inlaying and cutting laminate, I was hooked, and I’ve now built a 20 year career out of it!
Do you have a favourite project you’ve worked on so far — and why does it stand out?
My work is always evolving, and every project feels different — but right now, my favourite pieces to make are part of a limited-edition collection of bird side-tables. The most intricate and challenging one is the Kingfisher. Some of its details are made using tiny, precision-cut laminate pieces — so small I have to use tweezers!
I love pushing myself and exploring what’s possible with the machine, the material, and the craft itself. Each project teaches me something new.
Are there particular qualities of laminate that make it especially well-suited to your style of work?
Absolutely. I’m a true believer in sustainability — buy once, buy for life — and Formica® laminate fits that philosophy perfectly. It lasts a lifetime. I have customers who come back to me 20 years later and tell me their pieces still look as fresh as the day they bought them.
Were there specific features — like colour range, durability or finish, — that influenced your decision?
Formica laminate doesn’t fade or tarnish, making it the perfect material for furniture that’s meant to last. The range of colours and patterns is also a big part of its appeal, especially for my new bird range. I’m currently experimenting not just with colour combinations, but with different textures too.
For me, it’s a combination of the colour range and durability. Having access to such a wide spectrum of colours allows me to be playful and expressive in my designs, while the material’s strength and consistency mean I can achieve fine, detailed cuts with precision.
How does laminate perform in terms of fabrication, maintenance, or longevity?
Formica® laminate performs brilliantly across all three. It’s strong yet flexible enough to work with intricate shapes and patterns. It’s also incredibly low maintenance — easy to clean and resistant to everyday wear and tear — which makes it ideal for both functional and decorative furniture.
And longevity-wise, it’s brilliant. I’ve seen pieces I made decades ago that still look brand new, which is incredibly rewarding as a maker.
I’ve always used Formica® laminate because it’s the original and the best. It being made here in the UK ties in perfectly with my sustainability ethos. The quality really does stand above most other laminates.
If you could describe your experience with our laminate in three words, what would they be?
Longevity. Quality. Tactile.
