Supporting Sustainability through a Partnership with Scrap2Home
How Scrap2Home and Formica Corporation Are Building Sustainability and Community Impact
At Formica Corporation, sustainability is more than a commitment. It’s a core value that guides how we operate, how we design products, and how we engage with our communities. One partner that exemplifies this shared vision is Scrap2Home, a local nonprofit turning wood and scrap that would otherwise be wasted into beautiful, functional furniture for families in need.
Scrap2Home’s mission is simple and powerful: to reduce the amount of wood sent to landfills and provide free furniture to people who cannot afford it. The organization collects scrap from construction sites, businesses (including Formica Corporation), and homeowners and transforms it into furniture through the work of volunteers. Since its launch in 2020, Scrap2Home has upcycled roughly 18 tons of wood and scrap into more than 1,500 pieces of furniture.
“Scrap2Home started when I noticed how much wood was being thrown away in my own neighborhood,” notes Nick Francis, Executive Director of Scrap2Home. “I kept thinking to myself that I could use that wood to build something useful and give it away to people in need. We can keep all that waste out of landfills and provide quality furniture to people who cannot afford to buy it for themselves.”
This mission aligns closely with Formica Corporation’s sustainability commitments, particularly our focus on responsible material use, waste reduction and circularity in our products and processes. The company has provided scrap materials including panels, and there are plans to supply scrap laminate for future furniture projects. By supporting Scrap2Home, we help extend the lifecycle of resources, keep usable material out of landfills and contribute to meaningful community impact – all principles that mirror our own environmental goals.
We are also proud that Formica Group North America CEO, Mark Dunson, serves on the board of directors for Scrap2Home. His leadership and engagement reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives that merge environmental stewardship with community service.
Formica Corporation’s support for Scrap2Home has roots in the Cincinnati region. While Scrap2Home’s permanent location was being built, the organization operated temporarily at the Formica Corporation headquarters in Evendale/Cincinnati, Ohio, demonstrating our willingness to provide tangible support through facilities and resources.
In a major milestone for this growing nonprofit, Scrap2Home has moved into a permanent home at the Dever Family Foundation Skilled Trades Education Center on the grounds of Scouting America’s Camp Friedlander in Loveland, Ohio. This new facility will allow Scrap2Home to scale its mission and extend its impact even further. Formica Corporation proudly supports the skilled trades being taught hands-on at this Education Center and values the continued community engagement.
“Together with Scrap2Home, we are helping transform what was once considered waste into something that enriches homes and supports families in our community,” notes Mark. “It’s an example of how sustainability and social impact go hand in hand, and why partnerships like this matter.”
